If you've spent any time shopping for coilovers, you've run into the spec sheet wall: monotube, twin-tube, 1-way adjustable, 2-way adjustable, 3-way adjustable. The listing says "damping adjustable: yes," but doesn't say what that actually changes about how the car drives — or whether you need it at all.
Here's what each term actually means, how they relate to each other, and how to figure out which level of adjustability fits your car and how you drive it.
Monotube vs. Twin-Tube: The Shock Body Itself
Before you get to adjustability, there's a more basic design choice inside every coilover: how many tubes the shock body uses to move oil around as the suspension compresses and rebounds.
Twin-tube shocks use two nested cylinders. Oil is pushed from the inner working tube into an outer reserve tube through a valve at the base as the shock compresses. This is the traditional, budget-friendly design — it's forgiving of small dents and generally rides a bit softer, which is why it's common on OE-style shocks and some street-focused lowering kits.
Monotube shocks use a single tube with a floating piston that separates the oil from a pressurized nitrogen gas chamber. There's no second tube, so heat dissipates faster (less fade under hard, repeated use) and the design tolerates mounting in any orientation. Because the whole tube can be made larger in diameter, monotube shocks also allow for larger, more precise piston and valving setups — which is exactly what you need for multi-way adjustability to actually do something meaningful. That's why the overwhelming majority of performance coilovers, including most of what's in our coilover lineup, use a monotube design.
Neither design is "wrong" — twin-tube isn't inferior, it's just tuned for a different priority (ride comfort and cost over outright control). But once you're looking at adjustable coilovers, you're almost always looking at a monotube shock.
Adjustable Coilovers: Two Different Things People Mean
"Adjustable" gets used loosely, and it's worth separating two features that have nothing to do with each other:
Ride height adjustment — a threaded body or separate spring perch that lets you raise or lower the car. Nearly every coilover on the market has this. It's a mechanical adjustment, not a damping one, and it's covered in detail in our guide on ride height, preload, and damping adjustment.
Damping adjustment — how firm or soft the shock feels as it moves. This is what "1-way," "2-way," and "3-way" actually refer to, and it's a completely separate spec from ride height. A coilover can be height-adjustable with zero damping adjustment, or vice versa (rare, but it happens on some track-only setups).
The rest of this guide is about damping adjustment specifically — how many "ways" you can tune, and what each one is doing.
1-Way (Single) Adjustable: One Dial, Both Directions
A 1-way adjustable coilover has a single dial that adjusts both compression (the shock absorbing a bump) and rebound (the shock returning after a bump) together, in a fixed ratio set by the manufacturer's internal valving. Turn the dial stiffer, and both circuits firm up at once; turn it softer, and both loosen together.
This is the most common setup on street and daily-driver-oriented coilovers because it's simple to live with — you're not choosing between two conflicting adjustments, you're just picking an overall firmness that suits your car and road conditions. It's a real, useful adjustment, not a gimmick: it's just coupled rather than independent.
2-Way (Double) Adjustable: Compression and Rebound, Separated
A 2-way adjustable coilover splits compression and rebound into two independent dials (sometimes both at the top of the shock, sometimes one at the top and one at the bottom of the shock body). This matters because compression and rebound aren't doing the same job.
Compression damping controls how quickly the suspension lets the wheel move up into a bump — too soft and the car wallows or bottoms out over big hits; too stiff and small bumps get transmitted straight into the chassis. Rebound damping controls how quickly the suspension extends back out afterward — too soft and the car feels floaty and slow to settle after a dip; too stiff and the tire can't follow the road surface back down, which actually costs grip.
Being able to tune those independently lets you, for example, keep compression relatively soft for comfort over rough pavement while running firmer rebound to control body motion in corners — a combination a 1-way dial can't give you. This is the sweet spot for cars that see both spirited street driving and the occasional track day or autocross.
3-Way (Triple) Adjustable: Splitting Compression Itself in Two
A 3-way adjustable coilover keeps independent rebound like a 2-way setup, but further splits compression into low-speed compression and high-speed compression circuits. "Speed" here refers to the speed of the piston's movement inside the shock, not the car's road speed.
Low-speed compression governs body motion — the weight transfer under braking, cornering, and acceleration, and how much the car rolls, dives, or squats. High-speed compression governs how the suspension reacts to sharp, sudden inputs — a curb strike, an expansion joint, a track curb — independent of that body-motion tuning. Being able to set those separately means you can, for instance, run a stiffer low-speed setting for flat, responsive cornering on track without also transmitting every sharp hit straight into the chassis.
This level of adjustment is aimed at dedicated track, time attack, and race applications where a driver or a coach is actively tuning the balance session to session. It's rarely worth the added cost and complexity for a car that's mostly driven on the street.
So Which One Do You Actually Need?
More adjustability isn't automatically better — it's more useful the more precisely you plan to use it. As a rough guide:
Daily driver / occasional spirited driving: A quality 1-way adjustable coilover is genuinely enough for the vast majority of drivers. You get real control over overall firmness without needing to understand shock tuning theory to get a good result.
Street car that also sees track days or autocross: A 2-way adjustable setup earns its keep here. Independent rebound control makes a real, feelable difference in how the car settles through a set of corners, and it's still simple enough to dial in without a data logger.
Dedicated track, time attack, or race car: 3-way adjustable coilovers make sense once you're actually chasing lap times and have the seat time (or a coach) to use low-speed and high-speed compression as separate tools rather than guessing.

Every coilover listing on Springrates.com lists its adjustment type directly in the specifications table, so you don't have to guess from the marketing copy or dig through a manufacturer's PDF. When you're comparing options on a coilover collection page, check that spec line first — it'll tell you in plain terms whether you're looking at 1-way, 2-way, or 3-way adjustment before you even open the product page.

Is 2-way adjustable better than 1-way?
Not universally — it's better suited to a specific use case (mixed street/track driving where you want independent control over body motion and ride comfort). For a pure daily driver, a well-valved 1-way coilover often gives a better result than a 2-way unit set up by guesswork.
Do I need 3-way adjustable coilovers for a street car?
Almost never. 3-way adjustment is built for drivers actively tuning session to session on track. On the street, the extra low-speed/high-speed split rarely gets used to its potential and adds cost without a corresponding benefit.
Does monotube always mean the coilover is adjustable?
No — monotube describes the shock's internal construction, not its adjustability. Most adjustable coilovers happen to use a monotube design because it supports more precise valving, but a monotube shock can still be non-adjustable, just as a small number of twin-tube designs offer basic adjustment.
Does more adjustability mean a stiffer ride?
No. Adjustability is a range, not a firmness level — a 3-way coilover can be set up softer than a 1-way coilover, and vice versa. What more "ways" gives you is finer control over how that firmness is distributed between compression and rebound, not a guarantee of a harder ride.
