A torsion bar front end uses a steel bar that twists to do the job of a coil spring, and the bar is held at its mounts by bushings. When they soften or wear, the bar can move in its mount, which shows up as noise and a vague front end. Polyurethane resists deflection far better than the soft rubber it replaces.
