Between the shifter and the gearbox sits a chain of linkage bushings. When they are soft or worn, the shifter feels vague and the throw feels long. Firmer selector bushings take out that slop, so each shift is crisper and more positive. Polyurethane resists deflection far better than the soft rubber it replaces.
